Durining the last session we mentioned some basic rules in punctuation. Here we have two activities related to those points. Please read the instructions carefully and add punctuation to theses sentneces. Then, write your answers in the comments box and send them to me in the form of a PRIVATE MESSAGE.

Activity 1:

Add the correct end punctuatuation.

1. Congratulations

2. Do most people think that the governor was unaware of the theft

3. Do not open your test booklet until you are told to do so

4. Will the presiddent attend the meeting

5. Jason put the dishes in the dishwasher and then watched TV

Activity 2:

Look at an article in any English newspaper of magazine. Circle every end punctuation mark. Then answer these questions.

[In the case that you don't have enough time to search for articles we suggest this one which published in the New York Times]

1. How many final periods are there? __________  (or ______ %)

2. How many final question marks arwe there? __________  (or ______ %)

3. How many final exclamation points are there? __________  (or ______ %)

4. What is the total number of sentences? __________

Use this last number to calculate the percentages for each of the categories. Does the period occur most often?

Your Mission:

Write an article (200 to 250 words) discussing whether you think our world is getting better or getting worse. You can use your own ideas, but you might like to include some of these issues:

- medicine, scientific research, technology

- War, conflict between countries/groups

- Freedom and human rights

- Education, knowledge, and skills

- Quality of life

You should finish your article with a short conclusion summarising the main argument.

After writing your essay, check it through the following checklist:

What is the specific topic of the paragraph? Is it clearly stated?

Compare the topic sentence and the concluding sentence. Are they similar? If so, how?

Is the missing any important infromation? If so, write any questions that you think should be answered in this paragraph.

Are there any spelling and capitalizations errors in your paragraph?
